Just after week release, a Vietnamese researcher team Bkav claims to the crack the apple face recognition system by creating a replica of the face mask with the help of 2D, 3D printing, and some hand sculpting techniques.
The team demonstrated a brief video on how they created a human replica with some 2D, 3D prints and some nose sculpting which cost them about $150 in total. To trick a system $150 seems a negligible amount. With such a claim, there was an obvious commotion over how an investment of $150 can unlock your phone without consent. The Bkav team failed to explain the entire process how they unlocked the iPhone X with a replica of facial prosthetics. With such news flooding everywhere, Apple released a white paper on face security ID. Throughout the paper, Apple executives have explained the various privacy and security measures built into the face recognition system. Explaining in depth the Face ID works same as finger touch ID which reads with precision and details. The Face ID is designed to work against made up masks or any other techniques through the use of sophisticated anti-spoofing neural networks. Face ID even has attention- aware detail. It will recognize if your eyes are open or closed and are looking towards the phone. This makes the task of a mask impossible to unlock the iPhone without your consent.
Bkav’s method claimed that they used 2D and 3D image print with some face sculpting; both the tactics have been explained by Apple that they can be easily defeated. It has to be taken into consideration that iPhone X would lock itself after five unsuccessful attempts if logging in via Face ID. Also, the Face ID isn’t the only option to unlock the phone, passcode still remains the best alternative.
So, the conclusion comes down to if you like to try the phone by yourself, considering the price will dig a hole in a pocket for a long time, go for it. Also, we have to take into account that a company like Apple won’t slave to such hackers, they are well prepared for such attacks.
